SSDs for Rugged Storage

by Rich Seiling

If you are looking for super rugged storage for your photographs while in the field, you should look at the new Solid State Disks (SSD) that are hitting the market.

While there are only a few vendors for these drives right now, that will change soon, and prices should drop dramatically. This will likely make SSDs the standard for rugged field storage.

An SSD is more rugged than a hard drive because there are no moving parts, which means it’s far less susceptible damage if it’s dropped or otherwise abused. Hard disk drives, on the other hand, have many of moving parts that can go out of whack if handled roughly.

How much do they cost? Look at this pricing from Other World Computing for their Mercury On-The-Go Pro Drives using SSD:

64GB $279.99
128GB $449.99
256GB $729.99

Currently, traditional hard drives cost far less per GB, but considering the rigors of field photography, the ruggedness of an SSD may be worth it to you.

What are your thoughts about the Rugged LaCie Drives?

A SSD is going to be a lot more rugged than a LaCie rugged drive because a SSD has no moving parts. The LaCie rugged drives are still a laptop hard drive that has to spin at several thousand RPM while heads float across the disc surface. And while the LaCie case offers more crush protection than most portable 2.5 inch drive cases, I don’t think it’s a magic elixir. A SSD in a LaCie Rugged case...that would be interesting, but what I’d really like to see is a sealed waterproof case for SSDs that could handle a 50 foot drop to granite and being run over by a truck. That would be my definition of a “rugged” drive.
